On the Client Preference of LLM Fine-tuning in Federated Learning

Reinforcement learning with human feedback (RLHF) fine-tunes a pretrained large language model (LLM) using preference datasets, enabling the LLM to generate outputs that align with human preferences. Given the sensitive nature of these preference datasets held by various clients, there is a need to implement RLHF within a federated learning (FL) framework, where clients are reluctant to share their data due to privacy concerns. To address this, we introduce a feasible framework in which clients collaboratively train a binary selector with their preference datasets using our proposed FedBis. With a well-trained selector, we can further enhance the LLM that generates human-preferred completions. Meanwhile, we propose a novel algorithm, FedBiscuit, that trains multiple selectors by organizing clients into balanced and disjoint clusters based on their preferences. Compared to the FedBis, FedBiscuit demonstrates superior performance in simulating human preferences for pairwise completions. Our extensive experiments on federated human preference datasets -- marking the first benchmark to address heterogeneous data partitioning among clients -- demonstrate that FedBiscuit outperforms FedBis and even surpasses traditional centralized training.

MLKD-BERT: Multi-level Knowledge Distillation for Pre-trained Language Models

Knowledge distillation is an effective technique for pre-trained language model compression. Although existing knowledge distillation methods perform well for the most typical model BERT, they could be further improved in two aspects: the relation-level knowledge could be further explored to improve model performance; and the setting of student attention head number could be more flexible to decrease inference time. Therefore, we are motivated to propose a novel knowledge distillation method MLKD-BERT to distill multi-level knowledge in teacher-student framework. Extensive experiments on GLUE benchmark and extractive question answering tasks demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art knowledge distillation methods on BERT. In addition, MLKD-BERT can flexibly set student attention head number, allowing for substantial inference time decrease with little performance drop.

Improving Conversational Abilities of Quantized Large Language Models via Direct Preference Alignment

The rapid advancement of large language models (LLMs) has facilitated their transformation into conversational chatbots that can grasp contextual nuances and generate pertinent sentences, closely mirroring human values through advanced techniques such as instruction tuning and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). However, the computational efficiency required for LLMs, achieved through techniques like post-training quantization (PTQ), presents challenges such as token-flipping that can impair chatbot performance. In response, we propose a novel preference alignment approach, quantization-aware direct preference optimization (QDPO), that aligns quantized LLMs with their full-precision counterparts, improving conversational abilities. Evaluated on two instruction-tuned LLMs in various languages, QDPO demonstrated superior performance in improving conversational abilities compared to established PTQ and knowledge-distillation fine-tuning techniques, marking a significant step forward in the development of efficient and effective conversational LLMs.

Image-to-Text Logic Jailbreak: Your Imagination can Help You Do Anything

Large Visual Language Model\textbfs (VLMs) such as GPT-4V have achieved remarkable success in generating comprehensive and nuanced responses. Researchers have proposed various benchmarks for evaluating the capabilities of VLMs. With the integration of visual and text inputs in VLMs, new security issues emerge, as malicious attackers can exploit multiple modalities to achieve their objectives. This has led to increasing attention on the vulnerabilities of VLMs to jailbreak. Most existing research focuses on generating adversarial images or nonsensical image to jailbreak these models. However, no researchers evaluate whether logic understanding capabilities of VLMs in flowchart can influence jailbreak. Therefore, to fill this gap, this paper first introduces a novel dataset Flow-JD specifically designed to evaluate the logic-based flowchart jailbreak capabilities of VLMs. We conduct an extensive evaluation on GPT-4o, GPT-4V, other 5 SOTA open source VLMs and the jailbreak rate is up to 92.8%. Our research reveals significant vulnerabilities in current VLMs concerning image-to-text jailbreak and these findings underscore the the urgency for the development of robust and effective future defenses.

One Queue Is All You Need: Resolving Head-of-Line Blocking in Large Language Model Serving

$ $Large language models (LLMs) have become an increasingly important workload for cloud providers catering to both enterprise and consumer applications. LLM inference requests from these applications have end-to-end latency SLOs that must be adhered to in production settings. However, existing LLM serving systems focus on optimization objectives such as request serving throughput or request execution latency rather than the end-to-end latency SLOs. Achieving end-to-end SLOs for latency-sensitive requests is challenging due to head-of-line (HOL) blocking in the request queue, which results from bursty arrival rates and insufficient resources. To address the above challenge, we propose QLM, a multi-model queue management framework for LLM serving. QLM uses stochastic programming to orchestrate the actions of multiple LLM Serving Operations (LSOs) to reduce HOL blocking and maximize SLO attainment. Specifically, QLM uses the following LSOs: model swapping, request eviction, GPU-CPU state swapping, load balancing, and warm model start. Evaluation on heterogeneous GPU devices and models with real-world LLM serving dataset shows that QLM improves SLO attainment by 40-90% and throughput by 20-400% while maintaining or improving device utilization compared to other state-of-the-art LLM serving systems.

The USTC-NERCSLIP Systems for The ICMC-ASR Challenge

This report describes the submitted system to the In-Car Multi-Channel Automatic Speech Recognition (ICMC-ASR) challenge, which considers the ASR task with multi-speaker overlapping and Mandarin accent dynamics in the ICMC case. We implement the front-end speaker diarization using the self-supervised learning representation based multi-speaker embedding and beamforming using the speaker position, respectively. For ASR, we employ an iterative pseudo-label generation method based on fusion model to obtain text labels of unsupervised data. To mitigate the impact of accent, an Accent-ASR framework is proposed, which captures pronunciation-related accent features at a fine-grained level and linguistic information at a coarse-grained level. On the ICMC-ASR eval set, the proposed system achieves a CER of 13.16% on track 1 and a cpCER of 21.48% on track 2, which significantly outperforms the official baseline system and obtains the first rank on both tracks.

FLY-TTS: Fast, Lightweight and High-Quality End-to-End Text-to-Speech Synthesis

While recent advances in Text-To-Speech synthesis have yielded remarkable improvements in generating high-quality speech, research on lightweight and fast models is limited. This paper introduces FLY-TTS, a new fast, lightweight and high-quality speech synthesis system based on VITS. Specifically, 1) We replace the decoder with ConvNeXt blocks that generate Fourier spectral coefficients followed by the inverse short-time Fourier transform to synthesize waveforms; 2) To compress the model size, we introduce the grouped parameter-sharing mechanism to the text encoder and flow-based model; 3) We further employ the large pre-trained WavLM model for adversarial training to improve synthesis quality. Experimental results show that our model achieves a real-time factor of 0.0139 on an Intel Core i9 CPU, 8.8x faster than the baseline (0.1221), with a 1.6x parameter compression. Objective and subjective evaluations indicate that FLY-TTS exhibits comparable speech quality to the strong baseline.

A Personalised Learning Tool for Physics Undergraduate Students Built On a Large Language Model for Symbolic Regression

Interleaved practice enhances the memory and problem-solving ability of students in undergraduate courses. We introduce a personalized learning tool built on a Large Language Model (LLM) that can provide immediate and personalized attention to students as they complete homework containing problems interleaved from undergraduate physics courses. Our tool leverages the dimensional analysis method, enhancing students' qualitative thinking and problem-solving skills for complex phenomena. Our approach combines LLMs for symbolic regression with dimensional analysis via prompt engineering and offers students a unique perspective to comprehend relationships between physics variables. This fosters a broader and more versatile understanding of physics and mathematical principles and complements a conventional undergraduate physics education that relies on interpreting and applying established equations within specific contexts. We test our personalized learning tool on the equations from Feynman's lectures on physics. Our tool can correctly identify relationships between physics variables for most equations, underscoring its value as a complementary personalized learning tool for undergraduate physics students.

Video Emotion Open-vocabulary Recognition Based on Multimodal Large Language Model

Multimodal emotion recognition is a task of great concern. However, traditional data sets are based on fixed labels, resulting in models that often focus on main emotions and ignore detailed emotional changes in complex scenes. This report introduces the solution of using MLLMs technology to generate open-vocabulary emotion labels from a video. The solution includes the use of framework, data generation and processing, training methods, results generation and multi-model co-judgment. In the MER-OV (Open-Word Emotion Recognition) of the MER2024 challenge, our method achieved significant advantages, leading to its superior capabilities in complex emotion computation.

Cause-Aware Empathetic Response Generation via Chain-of-Thought Fine-Tuning

Empathetic response generation endows agents with the capability to comprehend dialogue contexts and react to expressed emotions. Previous works predominantly focus on leveraging the speaker's emotional labels, but ignore the importance of emotion cause reasoning in empathetic response generation, which hinders the model's capacity for further affective understanding and cognitive inference. In this paper, we propose a cause-aware empathetic generation approach by integrating emotions and causes through a well-designed Chain-of-Thought (CoT) prompt on Large Language Models (LLMs). Our approach can greatly promote LLMs' performance of empathy by instruction tuning and enhancing the role awareness of an empathetic listener in the prompt. Additionally, we propose to incorporate cause-oriented external knowledge from COMET into the prompt, which improves the diversity of generation and alleviates conflicts between internal and external knowledge at the same time. Experimental results on the benchmark dataset demonstrate that our approach on LLaMA-7b achieves state-of-the-art performance in both automatic and human evaluations.

LARR: Large Language Model Aided Real-time Scene Recommendation with Semantic Understanding

Click-Through Rate (CTR) prediction is crucial for Recommendation System(RS), aiming to provide personalized recommendation services for users in many aspects such as food delivery, e-commerce and so on. However, traditional RS relies on collaborative signals, which lacks semantic understanding to real-time scenes. We also noticed that a major challenge in utilizing Large Language Models (LLMs) for practical recommendation purposes is their efficiency in dealing with long text input. To break through the problems above, we propose Large Language Model Aided Real-time Scene Recommendation(LARR), adopt LLMs for semantic understanding, utilizing real-time scene information in RS without requiring LLM to process the entire real-time scene text directly, thereby enhancing the efficiency of LLM-based CTR modeling. Specifically, recommendation domain-specific knowledge is injected into LLM and then RS employs an aggregation encoder to build real-time scene information from separate LLM's outputs. Firstly, a LLM is continual pretrained on corpus built from recommendation data with the aid of special tokens. Subsequently, the LLM is fine-tuned via contrastive learning on three kinds of sample construction strategies. Through this step, LLM is transformed into a text embedding model. Finally, LLM's separate outputs for different scene features are aggregated by an encoder, aligning to collaborative signals in RS, enhancing the performance of recommendation model.

Xinyu: An Efficient LLM-based System for Commentary Generation

Commentary provides readers with a deep understanding of events by presenting diverse arguments and evidence. However, creating commentary is a time-consuming task, even for skilled commentators. Large language models (LLMs) have simplified the process of natural language generation, but their direct application in commentary creation still faces challenges due to unique task requirements. These requirements can be categorized into two levels: 1) fundamental requirements, which include creating well-structured and logically consistent narratives, and 2) advanced requirements, which involve generating quality arguments and providing convincing evidence. In this paper, we introduce Xinyu, an efficient LLM-based system designed to assist commentators in generating Chinese commentaries. To meet the fundamental requirements, we deconstruct the generation process into sequential steps, proposing targeted strategies and supervised fine-tuning (SFT) for each step. To address the advanced requirements, we present an argument ranking model for arguments and establish a comprehensive evidence database that includes up-to-date events and classic books, thereby strengthening the substantiation of the evidence with retrieval augmented generation (RAG) technology. To evaluate the generated commentaries more fairly, corresponding to the two-level requirements, we introduce a comprehensive evaluation metric that considers five distinct perspectives in commentary generation. Our experiments confirm the effectiveness of our proposed system. We also observe a significant increase in the efficiency of commentators in real-world scenarios, with the average time spent on creating a commentary dropping from 4 hours to 20 minutes. Importantly, such an increase in efficiency does not compromise the quality of the commentaries.
