DSP-informed bandwidth extension using locally-conditioned excitation and linear time-varying filter subnetworks
Bandwidth Extension
DSP-informed bandwidth extension using locally-conditioned excitation and linear time-varying filter subnetworks

In this paper, we propose a dual-stage architecture for bandwidth extension (BWE) increasing the effective sampling rate of speech signals from 8 kHz to 48 kHz. Unlike existing end-to-end deep learning models, our proposed method explicitly models BWE using excitation and linear time-varying (LTV) filter stages. The excitation stage broadens the spectrum of the input, while the filtering stage properly shapes it based on outputs from an acoustic feature predictor. To this end, an acoustic feature loss term can implicitly promote the excitation subnetwork to produce white spectra in the upper frequency band to be synthesized. Experimental results demonstrate that the added inductive bias provided by our approach can improve upon BWE results using the generators from both SEANet or HiFi-GAN as exciters, and that our means of adapting processing with acoustic feature predictions is more effective than that used in HiFi-GAN-2. Secondary contributions include extensions of the SEANet model to accommodate local conditioning information, as well as the application of HiFi-GAN-2 for the BWE problem.

Towards Realistic Emotional Voice Conversion using Controllable Emotional Intensity

Realistic emotional voice conversion (EVC) aims to enhance emotional diversity of converted audios, making the synthesized voices more authentic and natural. To this end, we propose Emotional Intensity-aware Network (EINet), dynamically adjusting intonation and rhythm by incorporating controllable emotional intensity. To better capture nuances in emotional intensity, we go beyond mere distance measurements among acoustic features. Instead, an emotion evaluator is utilized to precisely quantify speaker's emotional state. By employing an intensity mapper, intensity pseudo-labels are obtained to bridge the gap between emotional speech intensity modeling and run-time conversion. To ensure high speech quality while retaining controllability, an emotion renderer is used for combining linguistic features smoothly with manipulated emotional features at frame level. Furthermore, we employ a duration predictor to facilitate adaptive prediction of rhythm changes condition on specifying intensity value. Experimental results show EINet's superior performance in naturalness and diversity of emotional expression compared to state-of-the-art EVC methods.

MSceneSpeech: A Multi-Scene Speech Dataset For Expressive Speech Synthesis

We introduce an open source high-quality Mandarin TTS dataset MSceneSpeech (Multiple Scene Speech Dataset), which is intended to provide resources for expressive speech synthesis. MSceneSpeech comprises numerous audio recordings and texts performed and recorded according to daily life scenarios. Each scenario includes multiple speakers and a diverse range of prosodic styles, making it suitable for speech synthesis that entails multi-speaker style and prosody modeling. We have established a robust baseline, through the prompting mechanism, that can effectively synthesize speech characterized by both user-specific timbre and scene-specific prosody with arbitrary text input. The open source MSceneSpeech Dataset and audio samples of our baseline are available at https://speechai-demo.github.io/MSceneSpeech/.

Morse Code-Enabled Speech Recognition for Individuals with Visual and Hearing Impairments

The proposed model aims to develop a speech recognition technology for hearing, speech, or cognitively disabled people. All the available technology in the field of speech recognition doesn't come with an interface for communication for people with hearing, speech, or cognitive disabilities. The proposed model proposes the speech from the user, is transmitted to the speech recognition layer where it is converted into text and then that text is then transmitted to the morse code conversion layer where the morse code of the corresponding speech is given as the output. The accuracy of the model is completely dependent on speech recognition, as the morse code conversion is a process. The model is tested with recorded audio files with different parameters. The proposed model's WER and accuracy are both determined to be 10.18% and 89.82%, respectively.

From Modular to End-to-End Speaker Diarization
Speaker Diarization
From Modular to End-to-End Speaker Diarization

Speaker diarization is usually referred to as the task that determines ``who spoke when'' in a recording. Until a few years ago, all competitive approaches were modular. Systems based on this framework reached state-of-the-art performance in most scenarios but had major difficulties dealing with overlapped speech. More recently, the advent of end-to-end models, capable of dealing with all aspects of speaker diarization with a single model and better performing regarding overlapped speech, has brought high levels of attention. This thesis is framed during a period of co-existence of these two trends. We describe a system based on a Bayesian hidden Markov model used to cluster x-vectors (speaker embeddings obtained with a neural network), known as VBx, which has shown remarkable performance on different datasets and challenges. We comment on its advantages and limitations and evaluate results on different relevant corpora. Then, we move towards end-to-end neural diarization (EEND) methods. Due to the need for large training sets for training these models and the lack of manually annotated diarization data in sufficient quantities, the compromise solution consists in generating training data artificially. We describe an approach for generating synthetic data which resembles real conversations in terms of speaker turns and overlaps. We show how this method generating ``simulated conversations'' allows for better performance than using a previously proposed method for creating ``simulated mixtures'' when training the popular EEND with encoder-decoder attractors (EEND-EDA). We also propose a new EEND-based model, which we call DiaPer, and show that it can perform better than EEND-EDA, especially when dealing with many speakers and handling overlapped speech. Finally, we compare both VBx-based and DiaPer systems on a wide variety of corpora and comment on the advantages of each technique.

Pre-Training and Prompting for Few-Shot Node Classification on Text-Attributed Graphs

The text-attributed graph (TAG) is one kind of important real-world graph-structured data with each node associated with raw texts. For TAGs, traditional few-shot node classification methods directly conduct training on the pre-processed node features and do not consider the raw texts. The performance is highly dependent on the choice of the feature pre-processing method. In this paper, we propose P2TAG, a framework designed for few-shot node classification on TAGs with graph pre-training and prompting. P2TAG first pre-trains the language model (LM) and graph neural network (GNN) on TAGs with self-supervised loss. To fully utilize the ability of language models, we adapt the masked language modeling objective for our framework. The pre-trained model is then used for the few-shot node classification with a mixed prompt method, which simultaneously considers both text and graph information. We conduct experiments on six real-world TAGs, including paper citation networks and product co-purchasing networks. Experimental results demonstrate that our proposed framework outperforms existing graph few-shot learning methods on these datasets with +18.98% ~ +35.98% improvements.

Synth4Kws: Synthesized Speech for User Defined Keyword Spotting in Low Resource Environments

One of the challenges in developing a high quality custom keyword spotting (KWS) model is the lengthy and expensive process of collecting training data covering a wide range of languages, phrases and speaking styles. We introduce Synth4Kws - a framework to leverage Text to Speech (TTS) synthesized data for custom KWS in different resource settings. With no real data, we found increasing TTS phrase diversity and utterance sampling monotonically improves model performance, as evaluated by EER and AUC metrics over 11k utterances of the speech command dataset. In low resource settings, with 50k real utterances as a baseline, we found using optimal amounts of TTS data can improve EER by 30.1% and AUC by 46.7%. Furthermore, we mix TTS data with varying amounts of real data and interpolate the real data needed to achieve various quality targets. Our experiments are based on English and single word utterances but the findings generalize to i18n languages and other keyword types.

N-gram Prediction and Word Difference Representations for Language Modeling

Causal language modeling (CLM) serves as the foundational framework underpinning remarkable successes of recent large language models (LLMs). Despite its success, the training approach for next word prediction poses a potential risk of causing the model to overly focus on local dependencies within a sentence. While prior studies have been introduced to predict future N words simultaneously, they were primarily applied to tasks such as masked language modeling (MLM) and neural machine translation (NMT). In this study, we introduce a simple N-gram prediction framework for the CLM task. Moreover, we introduce word difference representation (WDR) as a surrogate and contextualized target representation during model training on the basis of N-gram prediction framework. To further enhance the quality of next word prediction, we propose an ensemble method that incorporates the future N words' prediction results. Empirical evaluations across multiple benchmark datasets encompassing CLM and NMT tasks demonstrate the significant advantages of our proposed methods over the conventional CLM.

Bypassing DARCY Defense: Indistinguishable Universal Adversarial Triggers

Neural networks (NN) classification models for Natural Language Processing (NLP) are vulnerable to the Universal Adversarial Triggers (UAT) attack that triggers a model to produce a specific prediction for any input. DARCY borrows the "honeypot" concept to bait multiple trapdoors, effectively detecting the adversarial examples generated by UAT. Unfortunately, we find a new UAT generation method, called IndisUAT, which produces triggers (i.e., tokens) and uses them to craft adversarial examples whose feature distribution is indistinguishable from that of the benign examples in a randomly-chosen category at the detection layer of DARCY. The produced adversarial examples incur the maximal loss of predicting results in the DARCY-protected models. Meanwhile, the produced triggers are effective in black-box models for text generation, text inference, and reading comprehension. Finally, the evaluation results under NN models for NLP tasks indicate that the IndisUAT method can effectively circumvent DARCY and penetrate other defenses. For example, IndisUAT can reduce the true positive rate of DARCY's detection by at least 40.8% and 90.6%, and drop the accuracy by at least 33.3% and 51.6% in the RNN and CNN models, respectively. IndisUAT reduces the accuracy of the BERT's adversarial defense model by at least 34.0%, and makes the GPT-2 language model spew racist outputs even when conditioned on non-racial context.

VSLLaVA: a pipeline of large multimodal foundation model for industrial vibration signal analysis

Large multimodal foundation models have been extensively utilized for image recognition tasks guided by instructions, yet there remains a scarcity of domain expertise in industrial vibration signal analysis. This paper presents a pipeline named VSLLaVA that leverages a large language model to integrate expert knowledge for identification of signal parameters and diagnosis of faults. Within this pipeline, we first introduce an expert rule-assisted signal generator. The generator merges signal provided by vibration analysis experts with domain-specific parameter identification and fault diagnosis question-answer pairs to build signal-question-answer triplets. Then we use these triplets to apply low-rank adaptation methods for fine-tuning the linear layers of the Contrastive Language-Image Pretraining (CLIP) and large language model, injecting multimodal signal processing knowledge. Finally, the fine-tuned model is assessed through the combined efforts of large language model and expert rules to evaluate answer accuracy and relevance, which showcases enhanced performance in identifying, analyzing various signal parameters, and diagnosing faults. These enhancements indicate the potential of this pipeline to build a foundational model for future industrial signal analysis and monitoring.

Zero-resource Hallucination Detection for Text Generation via Graph-based Contextual Knowledge Triples Modeling

Zero-resource Hallucination Detection for Text Generation via Graph-based Contextual Knowledge Triples Modeling

LLMs obtain remarkable performance but suffer from hallucinations. Most research on detecting hallucination focuses on the questions with short and concrete correct answers that are easy to check the faithfulness. Hallucination detections for text generation with open-ended answers are more challenging. Some researchers use external knowledge to detect hallucinations in generated texts, but external resources for specific scenarios are hard to access. Recent studies on detecting hallucinations in long text without external resources conduct consistency comparison among multiple sampled outputs. To handle long texts, researchers split long texts into multiple facts and individually compare the consistency of each pairs of facts. However, these methods (1) hardly achieve alignment among multiple facts; (2) overlook dependencies between multiple contextual facts. In this paper, we propose a graph-based context-aware (GCA) hallucination detection for text generations, which aligns knowledge facts and considers the dependencies between contextual knowledge triples in consistency comparison. Particularly, to align multiple facts, we conduct a triple-oriented response segmentation to extract multiple knowledge triples. To model dependencies among contextual knowledge triple (facts), we construct contextual triple into a graph and enhance triples' interactions via message passing and aggregating via RGCN. To avoid the omission of knowledge triples in long text, we conduct a LLM-based reverse verification via reconstructing the knowledge triples. Experiments show that our model enhances hallucination detection and excels all baselines.
