Text-to-Battery Recipe: A language modeling-based protocol for automatic battery recipe extraction and retrieval

Recent studies have increasingly applied natural language processing (NLP) to automatically extract experimental research data from the extensive battery materials literature. Despite the complex process involved in battery manufacturing -- from material synthesis to cell assembly -- there has been no comprehensive study systematically organizing this information. In response, we propose a language modeling-based protocol, Text-to-Battery Recipe (T2BR), for the automatic extraction of end-to-end battery recipes, validated using a case study on batteries containing LiFePO4 cathode material. We report machine learning-based paper filtering models, screening 2,174 relevant papers from the keyword-based search results, and unsupervised topic models to identify 2,876 paragraphs related to cathode synthesis and 2,958 paragraphs related to cell assembly. Then, focusing on the two topics, two deep learning-based named entity recognition models are developed to extract a total of 30 entities -- including precursors, active materials, and synthesis methods -- achieving F1 scores of 88.18% and 94.61%. The accurate extraction of entities enables the systematic generation of 165 end-toend recipes of LiFePO4 batteries. Our protocol and results offer valuable insights into specific trends, such as associations between precursor materials and synthesis methods, or combinations between different precursor materials. We anticipate that our findings will serve as a foundational knowledge base for facilitating battery-recipe information retrieval. The proposed protocol will significantly accelerate the review of battery material literature and catalyze innovations in battery design and development.

Robustness of Speech Separation Models for Similar-pitch Speakers

Robustness of Speech Separation Models for Similar-pitch Speakers

Single-channel speech separation is a crucial task for enhancing speech recognition systems in multi-speaker environments. This paper investigates the robustness of state-of-the-art Neural Network models in scenarios where the pitch differences between speakers are minimal. Building on earlier findings by Ditter and Gerkmann, which identified a significant performance drop for the 2018 Chimera++ under similar-pitch conditions, our study extends the analysis to more recent and sophisticated Neural Network models. Our experiments reveal that modern models have substantially reduced the performance gap for matched training and testing conditions. However, a substantial performance gap persists under mismatched conditions, with models performing well for large pitch differences but showing worse performance if the speakers' pitches are similar. These findings motivate further research into the generalizability of speech separation models to similar-pitch speakers and unseen data.

Large Language Model Enabled Semantic Communication Systems

Large language models (LLMs) have recently demonstrated state-of-the-art performance across various natural language processing (NLP) tasks, achieving near-human levels in multiple language understanding challenges and aligning closely with the core principles of semantic communication. Inspired by LLMs' advancements in semantic processing, we propose an innovative LLM-enabled semantic communication system framework, named LLM-SC, that applies LLMs directly to the physical layer coding and decoding for the first time. By analyzing the relationship between the training process of LLMs and the optimization objectives of semantic communication, we propose training a semantic encoder through LLMs' tokenizer training and establishing a semantic knowledge base via the LLMs' unsupervised pre-training process. This knowledge base aids in constructing the optimal decoder by providing the prior probability of the transmitted language sequence. Based on this foundation, we derive the optimal decoding criterion for the receiver and introduce the beam search algorithm to further reduce the complexity. Furthermore, we assert that existing LLMs can be employed directly for LLM-SC without additional re-training or fine-tuning. Simulation results demonstrate that LLM-SC outperforms classical DeepSC at signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) exceeding 3 dB, enabling error-free transmission of semantic information under high SNR, which is unattainable by DeepSC. In addition to semantic-level performance, LLM-SC demonstrates compatibility with technical-level performance, achieving approximately 8 dB coding gain for a bit error ratio (BER) of $10^{-3}$ without any channel coding while maintaining the same joint source-channel coding rate as traditional communication systems.

ALLaM: Large Language Models for Arabic and English

We present ALLaM: Arabic Large Language Model, a series of large language models to support the ecosystem of Arabic Language Technologies (ALT). ALLaM is carefully trained considering the values of language alignment and knowledge transfer at scale. Our autoregressive decoder-only architecture models demonstrate how second-language acquisition via vocabulary expansion and pretraining on a mixture of Arabic and English text can steer a model towards a new language (Arabic) without any catastrophic forgetting in the original language (English). Furthermore, we highlight the effectiveness of using parallel/translated data to aid the process of knowledge alignment between languages. Finally, we show that extensive alignment with human preferences can significantly enhance the performance of a language model compared to models of a larger scale with lower quality alignment. ALLaM achieves state-of-the-art performance in various Arabic benchmarks, including MMLU Arabic, ACVA, and Arabic Exams. Our aligned models improve both in Arabic and English from their base aligned models.

ReAttention: Training-Free Infinite Context with Finite Attention Scope

The long-context capability of the Large Language Models (LLM) has made significant breakthroughs, but the maximum supported context length remains a critical bottleneck limiting their practical applications. The constraint of context length in LLMs arises from the self-attention mechanism, which cannot effectively and efficiently capture the semantic relationships within infinitely long contexts via the limited pre-trained positional information and attention scope. In this work, we propose \textbf{ReAttention}, a training-free approach enabling LLM based on the self-attention mechanism to support an infinite context with a finite attention scope under sufficient memory resources. ReAttention performs the position-agnostic top-$k$ attention before the ordinary position-aware self-attention, freeing LLMs from the length extrapolation issue. We validate the performance of ReAttention on the LongBench, L-Eval, and InfiniteBench and demonstrate that it is on par with traditional methods. Furthermore, we also apply ReAttention on mainstream LLMs, including LLaMA3.1-8B and Mistral-v0.3-7B, enabling them to support context lengths of at least 1M and even expanding the context length of LLaMA3.2-3B-chat by 128$\times$ to 4M without any further training in Needle-In-A-Haystack tests. We also improve the efficiency of ReAttention with Triton and achieve an efficient extrapolation without additional overhead.

Learning to Compile Programs to Neural Networks

A $\textit{neural surrogate of a program}$ is a neural network that mimics the behavior of a program. Researchers have used these neural surrogates to automatically tune program inputs, adapt programs to new settings, and accelerate computations. Researchers traditionally develop neural surrogates by training on input-output examples from a single program. Alternatively, language models trained on a large dataset including many programs can consume program text, to act as a neural surrogate. Using a language model to both generate a surrogate and act as a surrogate, however, leading to a trade-off between resource consumption and accuracy. We present $\textit{neural surrogate compilation}$, a technique for producing neural surrogates directly from program text without coupling neural surrogate generation and execution. We implement neural surrogate compilers using hypernetworks trained on a dataset of C programs and find that they produce neural surrogates that are $1.9$-$9.5\times$ as data-efficient, produce visual results that are $1.0$-$1.3\times$ more similar to ground truth, and train in $4.3$-$7.3\times$ fewer epochs than neural surrogates trained from scratch.

Networks of Networks: Complexity Class Principles Applied to Compound AI Systems Design

As practitioners seek to surpass the current reliability and quality frontier of monolithic models, Compound AI Systems consisting of many language model inference calls are increasingly employed. In this work, we construct systems, which we call Networks of Networks (NoNs) organized around the distinction between generating a proposed answer and verifying its correctness, a fundamental concept in complexity theory that we show empirically extends to Language Models (LMs). We introduce a verifier-based judge NoN with K generators, an instantiation of "best-of-K" or "judge-based" compound AI systems. Through experiments on synthetic tasks such as prime factorization, and core benchmarks such as the MMLU, we demonstrate notable performance gains. For instance, in factoring products of two 3-digit primes, a simple NoN improves accuracy from 3.7\% to 36.6\%. On MMLU, a verifier-based judge construction with only 3 generators boosts accuracy over individual GPT-4-Turbo calls by 2.8\%. Our analysis reveals that these gains are most pronounced in domains where verification is notably easier than generation--a characterization which we believe subsumes many reasoning and procedural knowledge tasks, but doesn't often hold for factual and declarative knowledge-based settings. For mathematical and formal logic reasoning-based subjects of MMLU, we observe a 5-8\% or higher gain, whilst no gain on others such as geography and religion. We provide key takeaways for ML practitioners, including the importance of considering verification complexity, the impact of witness format on verifiability, and a simple test to determine the potential benefit of this NoN approach for a given problem distribution. This work aims to inform future research and practice in the design of compound AI systems.

SegTalker: Segmentation-based Talking Face Generation with Mask-guided Local Editing

Audio-driven talking face generation aims to synthesize video with lip movements synchronized to input audio. However, current generative techniques face challenges in preserving intricate regional textures (skin, teeth). To address the aforementioned challenges, we propose a novel framework called SegTalker to decouple lip movements and image textures by introducing segmentation as intermediate representation. Specifically, given the mask of image employed by a parsing network, we first leverage the speech to drive the mask and generate talking segmentation. Then we disentangle semantic regions of image into style codes using a mask-guided encoder. Ultimately, we inject the previously generated talking segmentation and style codes into a mask-guided StyleGAN to synthesize video frame. In this way, most of textures are fully preserved. Moreover, our approach can inherently achieve background separation and facilitate mask-guided facial local editing. In particular, by editing the mask and swapping the region textures from a given reference image (e.g. hair, lip, eyebrows), our approach enables facial editing seamlessly when generating talking face video. Experiments demonstrate that our proposed approach can effectively preserve texture details and generate temporally consistent video while remaining competitive in lip synchronization. Quantitative and qualitative results on the HDTF and MEAD datasets illustrate the superior performance of our method over existing methods.

Text-To-Speech Synthesis In The Wild

Text-to-speech (TTS) systems are traditionally trained using modest databases of studio-quality, prompted or read speech collected in benign acoustic environments such as anechoic rooms. The recent literature nonetheless shows efforts to train TTS systems using data collected in the wild. While this approach allows for the use of massive quantities of natural speech, until now, there are no common datasets. We introduce the TTS In the Wild (TITW) dataset, the result of a fully automated pipeline, in this case, applied to the VoxCeleb1 dataset commonly used for speaker recognition. We further propose two training sets. TITW-Hard is derived from the transcription, segmentation, and selection of VoxCeleb1 source data. TITW-Easy is derived from the additional application of enhancement and additional data selection based on DNSMOS. We show that a number of recent TTS models can be trained successfully using TITW-Easy, but that it remains extremely challenging to produce similar results using TITW-Hard. Both the dataset and protocols are publicly available and support the benchmarking of TTS systems trained using TITW data.

CLUE: Concept-Level Uncertainty Estimation for Large Language Models

Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable proficiency in various natural language generation (NLG) tasks. Previous studies suggest that LLMs' generation process involves uncertainty. However, existing approaches to uncertainty estimation mainly focus on sequence-level uncertainty, overlooking individual pieces of information within sequences. These methods fall short in separately assessing the uncertainty of each component in a sequence. In response, we propose a novel framework for Concept-Level Uncertainty Estimation (CLUE) for LLMs. We leverage LLMs to convert output sequences into concept-level representations, breaking down sequences into individual concepts and measuring the uncertainty of each concept separately. We conduct experiments to demonstrate that CLUE can provide more interpretable uncertainty estimation results compared with sentence-level uncertainty, and could be a useful tool for various tasks such as hallucination detection and story generation.
