ESCAPE: Energy-based Selective Adaptive Correction for Out-of-distribution 3D Human Pose Estimation

Despite recent advances in human pose estimation (HPE), poor generalization to out-of-distribution (OOD) data remains a difficult problem. While previous works have proposed Test-Time Adaptation (TTA) to bridge the train-test domain gap by refining network parameters at inference, the absence of ground-truth annotations makes it highly challenging and existing methods typically increase inference times by one or more orders of magnitude. We observe that 1) not every test time sample is OOD, and 2) HPE errors are significantly larger on distal keypoints (wrist, ankle). To this end, we propose ESCAPE: a lightweight correction and selective adaptation framework which applies a fast, forward-pass correction on most data while reserving costly TTA for OOD data. The free energy function is introduced to separate OOD samples from incoming data and a correction network is trained to estimate the errors of pretrained backbone HPE predictions on the distal keypoints. For OOD samples, we propose a novel self-consistency adaptation loss to update the correction network by leveraging the constraining relationship between distal keypoints and proximal keypoints (shoulders, hips), via a second ``reverse" network. ESCAPE improves the distal MPJPE of five popular HPE models by up to 7% on unseen data, achieves state-of-the-art results on two popular HPE benchmarks, and is significantly faster than existing adaptation methods.

Falcon2-11B Technical Report

We introduce Falcon2-11B, a foundation model trained on over five trillion tokens, and its multimodal counterpart, Falcon2-11B-vlm, which is a vision-to-text model. We report our findings during the training of the Falcon2-11B which follows a multi-stage approach where the early stages are distinguished by their context length and a final stage where we use a curated, high-quality dataset. Additionally, we report the effect of doubling the batch size mid-training and how training loss spikes are affected by the learning rate. The downstream performance of the foundation model is evaluated on established benchmarks, including multilingual and code datasets. The foundation model shows strong generalization across all the tasks which makes it suitable for downstream finetuning use cases. For the vision language model, we report the performance on several benchmarks and show that our model achieves a higher average score compared to open-source models of similar size. The model weights and code of both Falcon2-11B and Falcon2-11B-vlm are made available under a permissive license.

LORTSAR: Low-Rank Transformer for Skeleton-based Action Recognition

The complexity of state-of-the-art Transformer-based models for skeleton-based action recognition poses significant challenges in terms of computational efficiency and resource utilization. In this paper, we explore the application of Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) to effectively reduce the model sizes of these pre-trained models, aiming to minimize their resource consumption while preserving accuracy. Our method, LORTSAR (LOw-Rank Transformer for Skeleton-based Action Recognition), also includes a fine-tuning step to compensate for any potential accuracy degradation caused by model compression, and is applied to two leading Transformer-based models, "Hyperformer" and "STEP-CATFormer". Experimental results on the "NTU RGB+D" and "NTU RGB+D 120" datasets show that our method can reduce the number of model parameters substantially with negligible degradation or even performance increase in recognition accuracy. This confirms that SVD combined with post-compression fine-tuning can boost model efficiency, paving the way for more sustainable, lightweight, and high-performance technologies in human action recognition.

A Comparative Study of Transfer Learning for Emotion Recognition using CNN and Modified VGG16 Models

Emotion recognition is a critical aspect of human interaction. This topic garnered significant attention in the field of artificial intelligence. In this study, we investigate the performance of convolutional neural network (CNN) and Modified VGG16 models for emotion recognition tasks across two datasets: FER2013 and AffectNet. Our aim is to measure the effectiveness of these models in identifying emotions and their ability to generalize to different and broader datasets. Our findings reveal that both models achieve reasonable performance on the FER2013 dataset, with the Modified VGG16 model demonstrating slightly increased accuracy. When evaluated on the Affect-Net dataset, performance declines for both models, with the Modified VGG16 model continuing to outperform the CNN. Our study emphasizes the importance of dataset diversity in emotion recognition and discusses open problems and future research directions, including the exploration of multi-modal approaches and the development of more comprehensive datasets.

Seal: Advancing Speech Language Models to be Few-Shot Learners

Existing auto-regressive language models have demonstrated a remarkable capability to perform a new task with just a few examples in prompt, without requiring any additional training. In order to extend this capability to a multi-modal setting (i.e. speech and language), this paper introduces the Seal model, an abbreviation for speech language model. It incorporates a novel alignment method, in which Kullback-Leibler divergence loss is performed to train a projector that bridges a frozen speech encoder with a frozen language model decoder. The resulting Seal model exhibits robust performance as a few-shot learner on two speech understanding tasks. Additionally, consistency experiments are conducted to validate its robustness on different pre-trained language models.

LAST: Language Model Aware Speech Tokenization

Speech tokenization serves as the foundation of speech language model (LM), enabling them to perform various tasks such as spoken language modeling, text-to-speech, speech-to-text, etc. Most speech tokenizers are trained independently of the LM training process, relying on separate acoustic models and quantization methods. Following such an approach may create a mismatch between the tokenization process and its usage afterward. In this study, we propose a novel approach to training a speech tokenizer by leveraging objectives from pre-trained textual LMs. We advocate for the integration of this objective into the process of learning discrete speech representations. Our aim is to transform features from a pre-trained speech model into a new feature space that enables better clustering for speech LMs. We empirically investigate the impact of various model design choices, including speech vocabulary size and text LM size. Our results demonstrate the proposed tokenization method outperforms the evaluated baselines considering both spoken language modeling and speech-to-text. More importantly, unlike prior work, the proposed method allows the utilization of a single pre-trained LM for processing both speech and text inputs, setting it apart from conventional tokenization approaches.

GMFL-Net: A Global Multi-geometric Feature Learning Network for Repetitive Action Counting

With the continuous development of deep learning, the field of repetitive action counting is gradually gaining notice from many researchers. Extraction of pose keypoints using human pose estimation networks is proven to be an effective pose-level method. However, existing pose-level methods suffer from the shortcomings that the single coordinate is not stable enough to handle action distortions due to changes in camera viewpoints, thus failing to accurately identify salient poses, and is vulnerable to misdetection during the transition from the exception to the actual action. To overcome these problems, we propose a simple but efficient Global Multi-geometric Feature Learning Network (GMFL-Net). Specifically, we design a MIA-Module that aims to improve information representation by fusing multi-geometric features, and learning the semantic similarity among the input multi-geometric features. Then, to improve the feature representation from a global perspective, we also design a GBFL-Module that enhances the inter-dependencies between point-wise and channel-wise elements and combines them with the rich local information generated by the MIA-Module to synthesise a comprehensive and most representative global feature representation. In addition, considering the insufficient existing dataset, we collect a new dataset called Countix-Fitness-pose (https://github.com/Wantong66/Countix-Fitness) which contains different cycle lengths and exceptions, a test set with longer duration, and annotate it with fine-grained annotations at the pose-level. We also add two new action classes, namely lunge and rope push-down. Finally, extensive experiments on the challenging RepCount-pose, UCFRep-pose, and Countix-Fitness-pose benchmarks show that our proposed GMFL-Net achieves state-of-the-art performance.

Using Large Language Models to Generate Authentic Multi-agent Knowledge Work Datasets

Current publicly available knowledge work data collections lack diversity, extensive annotations, and contextual information about the users and their documents. These issues hinder objective and comparable data-driven evaluations and optimizations of knowledge work assistance systems. Due to the considerable resources needed to collect such data in real-life settings and the necessity of data censorship, collecting such a dataset appears nearly impossible. For this reason, we propose a configurable, multi-agent knowledge work dataset generator. This system simulates collaborative knowledge work among agents producing Large Language Model-generated documents and accompanying data traces. Additionally, the generator captures all background information, given in its configuration or created during the simulation process, in a knowledge graph. Finally, the resulting dataset can be utilized and shared without privacy or confidentiality concerns. This paper introduces our approach's design and vision and focuses on generating authentic knowledge work documents using Large Language Models. Our study involving human raters who assessed 53% of the generated and 74% of the real documents as realistic demonstrates the potential of our approach. Furthermore, we analyze the authenticity criteria mentioned in the participants' comments and elaborate on potential improvements for identified common issues.

FODA-PG for Enhanced Medical Imaging Narrative Generation: Adaptive Differentiation of Normal and Abnormal Attributes

Automatic Medical Imaging Narrative generation aims to alleviate the workload of radiologists by producing accurate clinical descriptions directly from radiological images. However, the subtle visual nuances and domain-specific terminology in medical images pose significant challenges compared to generic image captioning tasks. Existing approaches often neglect the vital distinction between normal and abnormal findings, leading to suboptimal performance. In this work, we propose FODA-PG, a novel Fine-grained Organ-Disease Adaptive Partitioning Graph framework that addresses these limitations through domain-adaptive learning. FODA-PG constructs a granular graphical representation of radiological findings by separating disease-related attributes into distinct "disease-specific" and "disease-free" categories based on their clinical significance and location. This adaptive partitioning enables our model to capture the nuanced differences between normal and pathological states, mitigating the impact of data biases. By integrating this fine-grained semantic knowledge into a powerful transformer-based architecture and providing rigorous mathematical justifications for its effectiveness, FODA-PG generates precise and clinically coherent reports with enhanced generalization capabilities. Extensive experiments on the IU-Xray and MIMIC-CXR benchmarks demonstrate the superiority of our approach over state-of-the-art methods, highlighting the importance of domain adaptation in medical report generation.

Knowledge AI: Fine-tuning NLP Models for Facilitating Scientific Knowledge Extraction and Understanding

This project investigates the efficacy of Large Language Models (LLMs) in understanding and extracting scientific knowledge across specific domains and to create a deep learning framework: Knowledge AI. As a part of this framework, we employ pre-trained models and fine-tune them on datasets in the scientific domain. The models are adapted for four key Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks: summarization, text generation, question answering, and named entity recognition. Our results indicate that domain-specific fine-tuning significantly enhances model performance in each of these tasks, thereby improving their applicability for scientific contexts. This adaptation enables non-experts to efficiently query and extract information within targeted scientific fields, demonstrating the potential of fine-tuned LLMs as a tool for knowledge discovery in the sciences.

MetaBGM: Dynamic Soundtrack Transformation For Continuous Multi-Scene Experiences With Ambient Awareness And Personalization

This paper introduces MetaBGM, a groundbreaking framework for generating background music that adapts to dynamic scenes and real-time user interactions. We define multi-scene as variations in environmental contexts, such as transitions in game settings or movie scenes. To tackle the challenge of converting backend data into music description texts for audio generation models, MetaBGM employs a novel two-stage generation approach that transforms continuous scene and user state data into these texts, which are then fed into an audio generation model for real-time soundtrack creation. Experimental results demonstrate that MetaBGM effectively generates contextually relevant and dynamic background music for interactive applications.
