EEGMamba: Bidirectional State Space Model with Mixture of Experts for EEG Multi-task Classification

In recent years, with the development of deep learning, electroencephalogram (EEG) classification networks have achieved certain progress. Transformer-based models can perform well in capturing long-term dependencies in EEG signals. However, their quadratic computational complexity poses a substantial computational challenge. Moreover, most EEG classification models are only suitable for single tasks and struggle with generalization across different tasks, particularly when faced with variations in signal length and channel count. In this paper, we introduce EEGMamba, the first universal EEG classification network to truly implement multi-task learning for EEG applications. EEGMamba seamlessly integrates the Spatio-Temporal-Adaptive (ST-Adaptive) module, bidirectional Mamba, and Mixture of Experts (MoE) into a unified framework. The proposed ST-Adaptive module performs unified feature extraction on EEG signals of different lengths and channel counts through spatial-adaptive convolution and incorporates a class token to achieve temporal-adaptability. Moreover, we design a bidirectional Mamba particularly suitable for EEG signals for further feature extraction, balancing high accuracy, fast inference speed, and efficient memory-usage in processing long EEG signals. To enhance the processing of EEG data across multiple tasks, we introduce task-aware MoE with a universal expert, effectively capturing both differences and commonalities among EEG data from different tasks. We evaluate our model on eight publicly available EEG datasets, and the experimental results demonstrate its superior performance in four types of tasks: seizure detection, emotion recognition, sleep stage classification, and motor imagery. The code is set to be released soon.

Target Prompting for Information Extraction with Vision Language Model

The recent trend in the Large Vision and Language model has brought a new change in how information extraction systems are built. VLMs have set a new benchmark with their State-of-the-art techniques in understanding documents and building question-answering systems across various industries. They are significantly better at generating text from document images and providing accurate answers to questions. However, there are still some challenges in effectively utilizing these models to build a precise conversational system. General prompting techniques used with large language models are often not suitable for these specially designed vision language models. The output generated by such generic input prompts is ordinary and may contain information gaps when compared with the actual content of the document. To obtain more accurate and specific answers, a well-targeted prompt is required by the vision language model, along with the document image. In this paper, a technique is discussed called Target prompting, which focuses on explicitly targeting parts of document images and generating related answers from those specific regions only. The paper also covers the evaluation of response for each prompting technique using different user queries and input prompts.

Active Testing of Large Language Model via Multi-Stage Sampling

Performance evaluation plays a crucial role in the development life cycle of large language models (LLMs). It estimates the model's capability, elucidates behavior characteristics, and facilitates the identification of potential issues and limitations, thereby guiding further improvement. Given that LLMs' diverse task-handling abilities stem from large volumes of training data, a comprehensive evaluation also necessitates abundant, well-annotated, and representative test data to assess LLM performance across various downstream tasks. However, the demand for high-quality test data often entails substantial time, computational resources, and manual efforts, sometimes causing the evaluation to be inefficient or impractical. To address these challenges, researchers propose active testing, which estimates the overall performance by selecting a subset of test data. Nevertheless, the existing active testing methods tend to be inefficient, even inapplicable, given the unique new challenges of LLMs (e.g., diverse task types, increased model complexity, and unavailability of training data). To mitigate such limitations and expedite the development cycle of LLMs, in this work, we introduce AcTracer, an active testing framework tailored for LLMs that strategically selects a small subset of test data to achieve a nearly optimal performance estimation for LLMs. AcTracer utilizes both internal and external information from LLMs to guide the test sampling process, reducing variance through a multi-stage pool-based active selection. Our experiment results demonstrate that AcTracer achieves state-of-the-art performance compared to existing methods across various tasks, with up to 38.83% improvement over previous SOTA.

How Well Can Vision Language Models See Image Details?

Large Language Model-based Vision-Language Models (LLM-based VLMs) have demonstrated impressive results in various vision-language understanding tasks. However, how well these VLMs can see image detail beyond the semantic level remains unclear. In our study, we introduce a pixel value prediction task (PVP) to explore "How Well Can Vision Language Models See Image Details?" and to assist VLMs in perceiving more details. Typically, these models comprise a frozen CLIP visual encoder, a large language model, and a connecting module. After fine-tuning VLMs on the PVP task, we find: 1) existing VLMs struggle to predict precise pixel values by only fine-tuning the connection module and LLM; and 2) prediction precision is significantly improved when the vision encoder is also adapted. Additionally, our research reveals that incorporating pixel value prediction as one of the VLM pre-training tasks and vision encoder adaptation markedly boosts VLM performance on downstream image-language understanding tasks requiring detailed image perception, such as referring image segmentation (with an average +10.19 cIoU improvement) and video game decision making (with average score improvements of +80.34 and +70.54 on two games, respectively).

MMSummary: Multimodal Summary Generation for Fetal Ultrasound Video

We present the first automated multimodal summary generation system, MMSummary, for medical imaging video, particularly with a focus on fetal ultrasound analysis. Imitating the examination process performed by a human sonographer, MMSummary is designed as a three-stage pipeline, progressing from keyframe detection to keyframe captioning and finally anatomy segmentation and measurement. In the keyframe detection stage, an innovative automated workflow is proposed to progressively select a concise set of keyframes, preserving sufficient video information without redundancy. Subsequently, we adapt a large language model to generate meaningful captions for fetal ultrasound keyframes in the keyframe captioning stage. If a keyframe is captioned as fetal biometry, the segmentation and measurement stage estimates biometric parameters by segmenting the region of interest according to the textual prior. The MMSummary system provides comprehensive summaries for fetal ultrasound examinations and based on reported experiments is estimated to reduce scanning time by approximately 31.5%, thereby suggesting the potential to enhance clinical workflow efficiency.

Openstory++: A Large-scale Dataset and Benchmark for Instance-aware Open-domain Visual Storytelling

Recent image generation models excel at creating high-quality images from brief captions. However, they fail to maintain consistency of multiple instances across images when encountering lengthy contexts. This inconsistency is largely due to in existing training datasets the absence of granular instance feature labeling in existing training datasets. To tackle these issues, we introduce Openstory++, a large-scale dataset combining additional instance-level annotations with both images and text. Furthermore, we develop a training methodology that emphasizes entity-centric image-text generation, ensuring that the models learn to effectively interweave visual and textual information. Specifically, Openstory++ streamlines the process of keyframe extraction from open-domain videos, employing vision-language models to generate captions that are then polished by a large language model for narrative continuity. It surpasses previous datasets by offering a more expansive open-domain resource, which incorporates automated captioning, high-resolution imagery tailored for instance count, and extensive frame sequences for temporal consistency. Additionally, we present Cohere-Bench, a pioneering benchmark framework for evaluating the image generation tasks when long multimodal context is provided, including the ability to keep the background, style, instances in the given context coherent. Compared to existing benchmarks, our work fills critical gaps in multi-modal generation, propelling the development of models that can adeptly generate and interpret complex narratives in open-domain environments. Experiments conducted within Cohere-Bench confirm the superiority of Openstory++ in nurturing high-quality visual storytelling models, enhancing their ability to address open-domain generation tasks. Speech-Mamba: Long-Context Speech Recognition with Selective State Spaces Models

Current automatic speech recognition systems struggle with modeling long speech sequences due to high quadratic complexity of Transformer-based models. Selective state space models such as Mamba has performed well on long-sequence modeling in natural language processing and computer vision tasks. However, research endeavors in speech technology tasks has been under-explored. We propose Speech-Mamba, which incorporates selective state space modeling in Transformer neural architectures. Long sequence representations with selective state space models in Speech-Mamba is complemented with lower-level representations from Transformer-based modeling. Speech-mamba achieves better capacity to model long-range dependencies, as it scales near-linearly with sequence length.

Paraformer-v2: An improved non-autoregressive transformer for noise-robust speech recognition

Attention-based encoder-decoder, e.g. transformer and its variants, generates the output sequence in an autoregressive (AR) manner. Despite its superior performance, AR model is computationally inefficient as its generation requires as many iterations as the output length. In this paper, we propose Paraformer-v2, an improved version of Paraformer, for fast, accurate, and noise-robust non-autoregressive speech recognition. In Paraformer-v2, we use a CTC module to extract the token embeddings, as the alternative to the continuous integrate-and-fire module in Paraformer. Extensive experiments demonstrate that Paraformer-v2 outperforms Paraformer on multiple datasets, especially on the English datasets (over 14% improvement on WER), and is more robust in noisy environments.

Exploring synthetic data for cross-speaker style transfer in style representation based TTS

Incorporating cross-speaker style transfer in text-to-speech (TTS) models is challenging due to the need to disentangle speaker and style information in audio. In low-resource expressive data scenarios, voice conversion (VC) can generate expressive speech for target speakers, which can then be used to train the TTS model. However, the quality and style transfer ability of the VC model are crucial for the overall TTS model quality. In this work, we explore the use of synthetic data generated by a VC model to assist the TTS model in cross-speaker style transfer tasks. Additionally, we employ pre-training of the style encoder using timbre perturbation and prototypical angular loss to mitigate speaker leakage. Our results show that using VC synthetic data can improve the naturalness and speaker similarity of TTS in cross-speaker scenarios. Furthermore, we extend this approach to a cross-language scenario, enhancing accent transfer.
